"Help Senator Barack Obama win and help Senator Barack Obama develop good space policy."

"Yes we can -- even in space"

Yep, it's for real. A Barack Obama supporter who started the "Space Policy Advisory Group" on the suitably-titled "MyBO" social networking portion of Obama's Web site is asking for YOUR money, to -- in his words -- "Help Senator Barack Obama win and help Senator Barack Obama develop good space policy." (Click image at right to see a screencap)

That's profound stuff there. What exactly constitutes a "good space policy," and how will your donation "help Senator Barack Obama develop" that "good space policy"? That, my friends, is left to the imagination, because the title and subtitle of this post is the entirety of the text on that page. Just give them your money, don't ask, and trust that Obama's Space Policy, like everything else he promises, will be "good."

Heck, for an extra $25, he may throw in some Hope and Change, too. And a raffle ticket to the Denver worship service acceptance rally. And a front-row seat to an intelligence briefing. And....

Anyway, I digress. Just give him your money, and trust.

Brilliant. Let's make this an open thread.

Speaking of space policy by Brandozilla

I'd like to hear more about the subject from the candidates.

Not to "Republican Trash" but this REALLY reminds me of when Rudy G was before the NRA and, while talking about his stances on gun control and the NRA's stances against it, told them to "Just trust me."

Don't question what is going to be done, just give your support and don't worry.. whatever is decided is best for you will be done.

Or, at least, whatever is done will be told is the best for you.

If you want a space program go watch Outer Limites or Star Trek. We need McCain to bolster this economy with a plan that gives the working class soemthing to strive for.

Obama's restrictions for the working class to grow and develop is ALL WRONG! By taxing the investor class, the working class will be screwed. All investments will go verseas with Obama's anti working class plan!

WE MUST HAVE McCAIN'S 3R this time around!

THIS IS OUR TRUMP CARD!

Let me explain. His taxes on the investor class kills all new jobs for the working class and gives the working class nothing to strive for. Why work and grow when Obama;s tax plan will only take your newfound wealth?

You need tolook at the real facts and the real issues. This is not a basketball game and there is no reste buttine when Obama sinks the nation!

Full disclosure: I'm married to an engineer working on space robots for the Navy.

For the Navy? by Dave in Fla

Wow that seriously makes me scratch my head and go "huh?". Must be NRL, cause I can't think of any reason why the Navy would be involved in space robots. Underwater robots would make perfect sense though.

"If they were merely incompetent, then at least SOME of their actions would have been to the benefit of the country."

If you have ever read much sci-fi, most authors have the Navy running any type of space military.

Plus, they did just show their skill by shooting down a satelite from a ship in lake Michigan (I think).

*chuckle* by Dave in Fla

In the real world though, the Air Force is responsible for space.

Of course it all gets muddled when you get into missile defense. US STRATCOM has the lead, with the Army running operations, the Air Force running orbital acquisitions and the Navy hosting shipboard missiles.

"If they were merely incompetent, then at least SOME of their actions would have been to the benefit of the country."

NRL

Why NRL has a spacecraft design office though? I'd love to hear the rationale behind that decision.

I'll give credit though, I haven't seen anyone else addressing this type of capability. Not sure if NASA is actively looking into tugs or not. I think they were once, but that might have dropped with the reorientation toward the Orion program.

I am looking forward to watching this sci-fi TV show, Stargate: Atlantis. It resumes on July 11, this Friday! While it's not good as Battlestar Galactica, I still like this show for no reason other than it's science fiction.

Well, Lost's 4th season is over, so what's else is new on TV right now? In all, I'm eager for Fall season to start. No more of this hot, humid summer season here in Maryland.

Bah, I stopped watching by LanceKates

Bah, I stopped watching Stargate once they got rid of MacGuyver.

I never could get into Atlantis.

Now, Dr. Who, on the other hand..... or Torchwood....

I couldn't get into Dr. Who, I don't know why, but I couldn't stand that show.

I've always been a big fan of space shows like Babylon 5, Star Trek: The Next Generation, and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. I think of all shows, Babylon 5 is the best space opera out there. Too bad, not many space shows are made anymore. I loved Space: Above and Beyond, it only lasted one season, it's sort of like WWII in space!

Deep Space Nine is probably the best of Star Trek franchises. Toward the end of 5th season, it got darker and gloomy, and the last two seasons easily rocked big time.

Unfortunately, few science fiction shows are top quality. Lost stands out. However, what about 4400, Threshold, and others? Sigh...if only quality sci-fi shows could be kept a bit longer and allowed to run out naturally...

I never really watched the original Dr Who, just the new ones.

And I am waiting to see what they will do on Torchwood since they killed off 2 of their team.

well, one was already dead, but still.

Nothing much to watch in the scifi genre.

"If they were merely incompetent, then at least SOME of their actions would have been to the benefit of the country."

Since then we have had Battlestar Galactica which was great.

Now we have Heroes, and there is still Stargate Atlantis which I like.

/big nerd here.

And it's tough for me to hear that 4400 has been cancelled, along with the likes of Jericho and Threshold. Sigh. I thought 4400's storyline was just about to break out, can you imagine how Seattle under Jordan's control clashing with the rest of negatives in the world? It would have made an interesting epic storyline...

In a certain way, Heroes is lot like 4400, people with superpowers running around...

BSG has been great by Shaggy Dog

but this season finale ending was a little bit too Planet of the Apes for my liking.

Maybe they can redeem things depending how they reveal the final cylon.

I think we're all pretty much big nerds here.

B5 spoiled me by Dave in Fla

I've had a hard time getting interested in anything since, especially since the stupidity of the Star Trek franchise seems to be the only thing anyone is willing put on the air.

Serenity was the first thing with any substance anyone tried to do that I had seen since, and the suits did the expected thing and pulled the plug before completing the first season.

Never saw BSG, at least the latest incarnation. I watched the original BSG when I was a kid though.

"If they were merely incompetent, then at least SOME of their actions would have been to the benefit of the country."

The guy who did security on the B5 show has his own radio show. Pretty neat show, but it isn't on in my area anymore.

There is supposed to be a live action show based on Star Wars.

Hopefully it doesn't rival a Dyson vacuum in terms of sucking ability.

Unfortunately the more I see star wars or read the books, the more that the Jedi Order reminds me of the UN.

In the end, they were utterly useless when opposed by military might. They deliberated and deliberated until it was too late to do anything but die.

Then, when that happened, everyone suffered from oppression.

but there is a Clone Wars CGI cartoon that will launch this August. From the trailers, it looked like it had potential.

I'd always thought it'd be great to do a detective show with a Jedi and some member of CorSec.

Solo by Shaggy Dog

I've always hoped to see something done between III and IV focusing on Solo, how he met Chewbacca and Lando, how he got mixed up with Jabba, etc.

The whole franchise is one of the biggest ATMs ever created, so maybe there's hope.

Well, problem is, books have already been written detailing all of that, with Lucas's Stamp of Approval.

(well, no book actually details the meeting of Chewie and Han, but it is inferred that Chewie was a slave being beaten and Han snapped and beat/killed the Imp that was beating Chewie, which is why Han got kicked out of the Empire's military.)

there'd be a big backlash from the star wars freaks (Yes, I am one. *sighs* ) if they were to mess around with that storyline.

That's why I've thought that one could use characters that were never named in the books or movies, from before any of the movies.

Anothe would be to have the story of a Jedi on the run from the Empire's jedi-hunters, helping out the people (solving mysteries/crimes/etc) as he ran.

Kind of like the show "The Pretender" from the 90's, but on a different planet each week.

Han had his own trilogy that told his back story, starting from when he was a street urchin on Corellia at around 13, going all the way until he has Chewie, the Falcon, and a bounty on his head. And it does go just like you said.

Have you added to the population of the McCain 2008 minicity yet today?

More Star Trek Science by Slightly Askew

Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge TNG fan. However, last night's episode was a stellar (heh) example of how bad their science was. They setup a tachyon net to stop the Romulans from invading Klingon space. A net, made of 23 ships, on the Klingon border...in space.

To quote Futurama, "When you were planning this peace ring, didn't you realize spaceships can move in three dimensions?"

You know, the only time I've seen 3 dimensions used in star trek (apart from their chess game) was in the 2nd movie.

And then, they only used it because they referenced it, specifically.

get out from under fossil fuel. I am no fanatic, but the space race fueled the technology age, which we all have to thank for the birth of the internet and computer technology. "It's not rocket science" is a common saying when you want to degrade someone's intelligence. Well, NASA has alot of rocket scientists.

I seriously think there is a platform that could be started if a candidate was to make space and technology a minor part of his overall campain. I am sure that few of us "regular" folks would make it a deal-breaker, but the overall theme of looking ahead to the future and American greatness would help round out the appeal of a candidate.

Space Policy by DonPMitchell

Well would have been nice to talk about space policy actually. Too late now...

So, is everyone OK with spending $100 billion on the International Space Station? Nobel prize winning physicist Steven Weinberg called it a "flying turkey". No seriously important science requires keeping human beings in low earth orbit year after year. And people are already starting to call it the European Space Station, which it will become the moment we stop our shuttle flights in 2010.

Why aren't we spending that money on real science, like more robotic probes? If that isn't practical, let's reallocate it to something more strategically important, like energy research.

Should we be concerned that our excellent Atlas and Delta rockets are not being used by anyone to launch commercial satellites? The EU passed a law that requires its companies to use Ariane 5. The rest of the market is owned by the Russians, via the Proton and Zenit platforms. Why can't Lockheed and Boeing compete? It might help to develop our Kwajalein Atoll facility, so commercial payloads can be launched from the equator (big energy/payload savings). But even launching from Russia, the Proton is beating us. Why?

Our military space budget is larger than NASA's, and our military is highly dependant now on space-based command and control, as well as the satellites of the National Reconnaissance Office. Failure to maintain this technology would or allow it to be neutralized by another nation would be a disaster.

From Special Report with Brit Hume:

The head of Minnesota's Gambling Control Board says that the Barack Obama campaign may be conducting an illegal raffle.

As we reported last night, Obama's campaign Web site says anyone making a contribution of at least five dollars before July 31 "could be one of 10 supporters chosen to meet Barack Obama."

The selected supporters can each bring a guest and will be flown to Denver to spend two days at the Democratic National Convention.

But the Minneapolis Star Tribune newspaper reports Tom Barrett of the Gambling Board says it is illegal in Minnesota to conduct a raffle as part of a political fundraiser. Barrett says the Obama Web site does not say the offer is void in Minnesota. And, he says three elements make it a form of gambling: It costs money to participate, it involves "luck of the draw" and one wins something of value.

Yes we can, violate state laws!
